About Colby

Colby Kipnes is a New York City based actor, singer, dancer, and musician whose career already spans both stage and screen. Colby recently made her Broadway debut, starring in the psychological thriller Grey House, directed by Joe Mantello. Before that, Colby was seen on many regional stages, television appearances, and short films. Colby lends her vocal talents as a series regular to multiple animated series, including “Bubble Guppies” and “Nella the Princess Knight” for Nickelodeon.

Colby is a passionate storyteller in everything she does-whether acting, dancing, singing, or playing her instruments.  She trains regularly in jazz, hip hop, ballet, tap, voice, and guitar. Colby was introduced to American Sign Language in Grey House Broadway and is now studying to become fluent (she loves how universal a language it is and how much acting comes through in sign).

When not on stage, set, rehearsing, or trying to maintain peace in her house as the middle child, Colby is an avid reader (obsessed with Thrillers), animal lover (owns 4 dogs and very active in dog rescue), and she usually has her guitar or ukulele in her arms.

Grey House on Broadway

Colby originated the role of  Squirrel in  Broadway’s Grey House, Directed by Joe Mantello.  Woven together by acapella song, Grey House tells the story of a couple that crashes their car in the mountains and seeks shelter in an isolated cabin inhabited by an unusual family. The couple is welcomed inside as the blizzard rages on outside and the couple is forced to spend several nights with their creepy hosts.

Colby’s Squirrel, the youngest and possibly most bizarre girl in the house, is a feral sharp, funny teen who spends her days living within the walls of the house, tending to her gardens, and chasing animals in the woods.

Colby was ecstatic to make her Broadway Debut in this principal role.  Her dreams came true as she sang and danced her haunted self across the Lyceum Stage eight shows a week.

Kipnes’ stellar performance as Squirrel is laced with a grim ferocity that is matched only by her mysterious counterpart, played by the terrifying Cyndi Coyne. Trapped within it all, O’Connell’s straight-faced Boy gazes on the unfurling saga with wide, unflinching eyes while the house, a veritable character in itself, continues to moan and groan under the weight of the dark tragedy playing out within its walls.

Equally tremendous are the quartet of “sisters.” Caruso, Colby Kipnes, Alyssa Emily Marvin & Millicent Simmonds exist together on stage like a singular organism, moving and speaking as one in an astonishing feat of shared performance. Holloway smartly incorporates American Sign Language into the girls’ shared bond, with Marvin seamlessly translating for Simmonds and the girls sometimes signing only for private thoughts.

Joined by ferociously talented quintet of child-to-adolescent actors. Oh, and they occasionally break into strange dances and eerily precise vocal harmonies on songs that seem drenched in mountain nostalgia. — Colby Kipnes is suitably feral (and her movements superbly musical when called for) as Squirrel
